She will also be seen in Nickelodeon’s musical comedy ‘Rags’ in 2012

Vancouver, BC – October 2011 –Devon Weigel joins a stellar cast in the Fox 2000 feature film “The Big Year”, starring Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson. The film hits theatres on October 14th, 2011. Devon plays the role of Karen, who is a bit of a high-maintenance newlywed. She boards a plane heading to the island of Attu, Alaska (with Jack Black and Owen Wilson’s characters), believing she is in for some kind of luxurious honeymoon resort. Turns out, she couldn’t have been more off base, and mayhem ensues.  Devon says, “The director, David Frankel, (The Devil Wears Prada) was a real pleasure to work with. This is probably the role I’m most proud of.”

This project gave Devon the rare opportunity to work with some of the industry’s most talented comedians, whom she has long admired for their comedic abilities. “The Big Year” is her first major foray into the realm of feature film, and it is with a role that was quite memorable and incredibly enjoyable for her to play.  For part of the filming Devon had the chance to travel up to the Yukon, which she says has a beauty and character unlike any place that she has previously traveled.

Most recently, Devon completed working on Nickelodeon’s musical comedy “Rags”, coming out next year.  She plays Irma, the high-strung, slightly crazed stylist/publicist to a famous pop star played by Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee), who is secretly in love with her client’s father and manager played by Isaiah Mustafa (The Old Spice Guy).  On another recently aired Nickelodeon movie Devon brought the animated character of Vicky to life in “A Fairly Odd Movie”.

Devon may be best known for her lead role as Tanya Shedden in the popular teen drama Global/ABC Family television series “Falcon Beach”. She also had a recurring role on the USA series “Fairly Legal” as Kim, the love interest of Baron Vaughn’s character Leo.  Other television credits include “Psych”, “Smallville” and “Supernatural” as well as a role in the feature film “John Tucker Must Die”. Devon won Best Actress at the 2004 Vancouver 24 Hour Film Fest.

Devon grew up in Calgary, Alberta with very supportive parents and an older brother, Jeremy. Her inner performer shone through from a young age. She trained in dance for many years, participated in theatre productions for kids, completed the Grade 8 level of piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music, and was a member of her high school performing choir and vocal ensemble.  Entertaining and performing is something she always knew she wanted to pursue.

After graduating from the Mount Royal University Theatre Arts Performance program in Calgary, Devon stayed in the city to work at Shakespeare in the Park in Calgary for two seasons.  Since moving to Vancouver Devon has trained with various coaches including Matthew Harrison, Ted Whittall, Lori Triolo, Peter Howitt, Ben Ratner and the great Larry Moss.

Devon aspires to create her own projects, and in the last year has formed a parody rap/hip hop group called Coupla Hot Chicks...Maybe Three with her two best friends Leah Gauthier and fellow actress Elyse Levesque. Their comedic music video “Over It” is currently up on Youtube. The video for their next single, “Vagine Rhyme Time” is coming out this month, and a “Behind The Music” mockumentary is in the works.

Devon is a cat owner and has a great love for all animals.  She is an avid supporter of the SPCA and World Wildlife Fund.  She has also supported Samaritan’s Purse and admires the work of her long-time friend who works with this organization in Africa installing water filtration systems in poor areas.

Devon regularly attends the performances of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera.  She loves to cook, experimenting with a variety of recipes including vegetarian, vegan, Italian and French dishes, and is currently working her way through Ina Garten’s “Barefoot in Paris” cook book. Other pursuits include learning French and Spanish and to play the violin.

An avid reader, Devon’s interests also expand to future writing endeavors such as screenplays and novels.  Documentary filmmaking is another medium she would like to explore.  Devon’s passion lies in telling stories, whether it’s through acting, writing or directing.  She says, “I’m interested in entertaining and creating something that means something to someone somewhere.  That would be a meaningful, fulfilling type of success to me.”
